Five Korean Pickpockets Busted by TCPD and Suspects Detained Incommunicado
On March 7, 2017, the Criminal Investigation Division of the Taipei City Police Department (CID, TCPD) busted a group of five Korean pickpockets, three males and two females, when they started a fresh round of pickpocketing in the crowd at Taipei 101 in Xinyi District. The detectives with the Theft Unit of the CID injured while arresting those suspects; still, the police brought the suspects under control and took them into custody. The suspects were uncooperative during the police interrogation. After they were referred to the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office, they pretended not to understand the Korean interpretation, attempting to procrastinate and smother up their crime. Later they requested the presence of staff with Korean Mission in Taiwan and attorneys at the court, which led to a long delay of the court hearing. Nevertheless, after reviewing the legitimacy of evidence collected and due process required, the court decided to detain the five syndicate members and hold them incommunicado.
