Traffic Control Information for 2017 Taipei Lantern Festival

The 2017 Taipei Lantern Festival is going to be organized by the Taipei City Government from Saturday, Feb 4th to Sunday, Feb 12th. The venue selected to exhibit lanterns covers the pavements, North Gate (Beimen), Zhongshan Hall (中山堂) , Nishi Honganji (西本願寺) and Red House (紅樓) on Zhonghua Road section 1 (中華路1段) between North Gate and Guiyang Street (貴陽街). It is predicted that a large number of people will be attracted to watch the lanterns. To maintain smooth traffic flow and ensure safety around the venue, the Taipei Police Department, in accordance with the Traffic Maintenance and Control Plan, has worked out the traffic control measures as follows:


● Traffic controls during this festival:

1. During this festival, a section of Yanping South Road (延平南路) between Zhongxiao West Road (忠孝西路) and the lane 9, Zhonghua Road section 1 (中華路1段9巷) will be controlled if large number of visitors gather around North Gate.

2. At the opening and closing ceremonies, a section of Chengdu Road (成都路) between Xining South Road (西寧南路) and Zhonghua Road (中華路), as well as a section of Hanzhong Street (漢中街) between Chengdu Road (成都路) and Neijiang Street (內江街) are to be controlled. At the same time, the northbound vehicles within Neijiang Street (內江街) and Changsha Street (長沙街) are to be restricted. The time when the traffic will be subject to control is as follows:

(1) During the opening ceremony: On Feb 4th, from 4:00pm to 8:30pm.

(2) During the closing ceremony: On Feb 12th, from 5:00pm to 9:30pm.

3. During the west district carnival parade:

(1) On Saturday, Feb 11th from 12:00pm to 8:00pm, Zhonghua Road (中華路) between Zhongxiao West Road (忠孝西路) and Chengdu Road (成都路), Kaifeng Street (開封街) between Yanping South Road (延平南路) and Xining South Road (西寧南路), Wuchang Street (武昌街) between Zhonghua Road (中華路) and Yanping South Road (延平南路) , Luoyang Street (洛陽街) between Zhonghua Road (中華路) and lane 16, section 2 (忠孝西路2段16巷), Hankou Street (漢口街) and Emei Street (峨嵋街) between Xining South Road (西寧南路) and Zhonghua Road (中華路), as well as Yanping South Road (延平南路) between Hankou Street(漢口街) and Wuchang Street (武昌街) will be controlled.

(2) On Saturday, Feb 11th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, Chengdu Road (成都路) between Zhonghua Road (中華路) and Kangding Road (康定路), Kangding Road (康定路) between Chengdu Road (成都路) and Wuchang Street (武昌街), Hanzhong Street (漢中街) between Chengdu Road (成都路) and Neijiang Street (內江街) will be subject to control. Besides, the northbound vehicles within Neijiang Street (內江街) and Changsha Street (長沙街) are also restricted.


● Traffic Advisory

1. From Feb 4th to Feb 12th, the police will increase their crackdown on illegal parking on Zhonghua Road (中華路), Chengdu Road (成都路) and Zhongxiao West Road (忠孝西路).

2. Due to the insufficiency of parking lots around the venue, people who are planning to tour the venue are strongly recommended to use the public transportation systems such as MRT and avoid driving.

3. During the festival, traffic on Zhongxiao West Road (忠孝西路) and Zhonghua Road (中華路)will be heavy, so drivers are advised to take a detour. In addition, drivers who enter the city from Zhongxing Bridge (中興橋) and Zhongxiao Bridge (忠孝橋) are advised to use Huajiang Bridge (華江橋) and Taipei Bridge (臺北橋). 4. From Jan 31st to Feb 14th, some lanes of Zhonghua Road (中華路), Luoyang Street (洛陽街) and Bangka Boulevard (艋舺大道) will be used to set up or take apart lanterns. So people driving on those roads are reminded to slow down and be more careful to avoid any accidents.


The Taipei City Police Department has requested the Police Broadcasting Service to broadcast latest traffic information on traffic conditions and control to keep drivers updated all the time. To ensure safe and smooth driving, drivers are required to follow the police officers and volunteer traffic policemen who are assigned to direct traffic at various intersections.
